A new station commander has taken over at RAF Coningsby.

Group Captain Johnny Stringer has succeeded Group Captain Martin 'Sammy' Sampson as the boss of the Lincolnshire station.

During Group Captain Sampson's tenure, RAF Typhoons deployed operationally for the first time.

Group Captain Sampson was the detachment commander of the Typhoon and Tornado aircrews based at Gioia del Colle in Italy during the Libyan crisis.

Group Captain Stringer has served at Coningsby before, in the period 2007 to 2009 he was Officer Commanding 29(R) Squadron, the Typhoon conversion unit.

"I'm delighted to be back at RAF Coningsby. This station and the Typhoon Force have a vital role in the defence of the nation, both at home and overseas, and it is an honour to be entrusted with its command," he said.

"I'm also very much looking forward to engaging with people and renewing friendships across the station and in the local area."
