OPINION: Manchester United's 12 point advantage is good for them, but is it the end of the Premier League as we know it?

After a decade of boom, hype and drama, has the Premier League finally hit a plateau?

I’m asking this as the 12 point gap at the top of the Premier League between Manchester United and Manchester City does not look like it is going to be this weekend.

  1. Sir Alex Ferguson has helped guide Manchester United to a 12-point lead over Manchester City

The fact that the league leaders have been far from their best and are still 12 points clear is a worry for our other top teams, especially if they want to have European success.

It may point however, to the fact the so called whipping boys are now a lot stronger and better prepared than previous.

Has the Premier League moved away from being a league where you know who the top four are going to be, who will be mid table and who will be battling it out at the bottom?

It wasn’t long ago that you would’ve laughed at the thought of Aston Villa getting relegated.

I think it’s simply because the promoted are now stronger. If these promoted teams don’t get relegated then who will? And this is the trap so called big teams have fallen into. They are caught out by the quality of the lesser teams.

At the much coveted fourth spot now is a battle to the death which, prior to Spurs sneaking in was unheard of.

For so many years the big four have had a huge influence on the Champions League as well as our domestic league but, there may be a correction ahead and it’s now time for everybody else to catch them up.

Would you rather have a slightly more even Premier league, but not the success in Europe or the usual suspects at the top and we are a force in Europe? I’m honestly not sure. I loved those Champion League nights where we dominated the semis and final but, I’m not sure if I would as much if it was at the expense of our own league.

“I don't think I follow the logic here. Because the league is of a higher quality the better teams are of worse quality than before? Also I could have sworn an English club won the Champion's League last season. What has skewed it is Man City being rank bad in Europe, a tradition Mancini has carried on from his Inter days. Then Chelsea continued with their internal struggles.

The Spanish league has got worse in quality, compared to previous years, and are in danger of the jewel of that league going out to a team not even close top of their domestic league. So I don't think it follows that the league having better teams all the way through means worse in the Champion's league.

What will be interesting is the effect that FFP has, if it does have any. If it works as it should then Arsenal and Man United will be battling out amongst themselves every season and playing Madrid and Barcelona in the Semi finals of Europe. I doubt some how that Chelsea and Man City, Malaga as well, will let that happen though.”
