"The inspectors picked up very quickly on the special atmosphere of the school, the shared vision, the exceptional quality of relationships, excellent discipline and the fact that the overwhelming majority of students enjoy being here."

Some areas of improvement were highlighted in the report which would be required for the school to become 'outstanding' overall - all relating to making more of the teaching outstanding, especially in the sixth form, science, French and German.

Overall, lead inspector Frank Knowles, wrote: "Good teaching throughout the school stems from teachers' excellent subject knowledge and commitment.

"Students have challenging targets in all school subjects and progress towards these is checked regularly.

"Students' behaviour is exemplary. They show high levels of respect for each other and are very proud to be members of the school community."

He also praised the governing body and headteacher for giving clear direction in their mission to become an outstanding school.

Mr Law added: "The inspection confirmed that the school is in very good shape and well-placed to secure further improvement in the coming years, with an excellent capacity for this within the leadership of the school, at all levels.

"Carre's is not a complacent school and will look to secure the improvements necessary to make us an outstanding school."
