Former players Matt Glass and Danny Hargreaves came back to haunt Lincoln United as Grantham sealed a 2-0 derby win at Ashby Avenue yesterday.

The defeat was John Wilkinson's team's sixth in seven games in UniBond League Division One (South) and they have now only picked up one point from a possible 21 on offer.

In a feisty game, United had the better of the first half and Sean Cann and Brendan McDaid went close for the hosts.

The visitors' best chance of the first half saw Hargreaves fire straight at goalkeeper Mario Ziccardi.

United flew out of the blocks in the second half and could have taken the lead when experienced wing back Terry Fleming played in Chris Funnell, but his strike was well saved by goalkeeper Rob Murray.

Moments later, ex-Gingerbread George Zuerner hit a speculative effort from distance which was tipped over the bar by Murray as United looked to break the deadlock..

The visitors took the lead, in the 57th minute, when Glass broke free and made no mistake with a cool finish.

United could have levelled immediately but Funnell's header was just out of the reach of Zuerner.

Grantham doubled their advantage with just over 20 minutes left to play, when Hargreaves scuffed his shot past Ziccardi.

In the final minutes, Danny Brooks' first action after coming on a sub for Grantham was to win a foul following a somehwat theatrical dive over McDaid's challenge.

That incensed the United coaching staff and players but fortunately, only the Whites' Fleming was booked for dissent.

WHITES: Ziccardi, Fleming, Porter, McDaid, Wilkins, Machin, Zuerner (Wright 90), Melton (Bull 81), Funnell (O'Halloran 71), Cann, Smith.

“Rose tinted specs worn by the reporter here obviously.
A scrappy, but even, first half was followed by a second period in which Grantham stepped up a gear & never looked remotely like taking less than three comfortable points.”
