THE final stages of bridging the A17 with a new cycle and footpath are soon to be under way.

After completion of this phase of the Leasingham to Sleaford Connect2 cycle and footpath, work is needed to complete the entire route into Sleaford.

The Connect2path will help schoolchildren, wheelchair users and walkers who would otherwise have to negotiate the Holdingham roundabout.

North Midland Construction will spend six weeks building up the embankments to the bridge crossing the dual carriageway.

A further week's finishing off by county highways will complete the first phase of the footpath, which will be opened in mid-September.

The route is financed by North Kesteven District Council, Lincolnshire County Council and Sustrans, the sustainable transport charity.

“All joking apart (and yes Lynn, it is lovelly ice cream!), what is the solution to this problem. What is the safest way to allow people to cross the junction without disrupting the traffic, and who is likely to fund it?”

“Yes, thank you for these contributions. The Skellingthorpe roundabout on the Lincoln by-pass would be a good candidate. The ice-cream certainly is good, but also Skellingthorpe village has some similarities with Leasingham in being cut off by a major road and having a difficult crossing.

Let's hope some of the powers that be are reading this and can put this one on the list if it isn't there already. Perhaps the greater Lincoln park which was mentioned a few days ago might provide a further incentive, and maybe, just maybe, some money in the next decade!”

“Steve, the ice cream is bl...y good ice cream, not your average Mr Softy etc.
And don't forget the beautiful aromatic smell that permeates from that neck of the woods, money well spent.
Seriously, I drove passed this roundabout today, and there were a couple of cyclists waiting to cross at the refuge in the centre of the carriageway, and quite a few children, possibly going to the aforementioned ice cream parlour. Let's hope they all got to their destination in one piece.”

“The choices are either a subway or a bridge. Few people would use a subway so that would leave a fairly high bridge (to allow lorries to pass under it) with a ramp for cycles and pushchairs etc, that was jump proof. A bridge to that spec would take up a fair amount of space and be very expensive for the sake of and ice cream cornet!”

“Agreed Troy, there's often people on cycles or pedestrians waiting to make a dash for the other side at this roundabout, taking their life in their hands.
I too, live on Doddy and often walk down Skelly cycle track. I would cycle there from home, but it's too dangerous getting to the other side of the by-pass.”

“Chris, well put I'm with you on that thought. How about the roundabout at the end of Skellingthorpe Rd / A46 leading to Skelly? I have cycled to the Dairy made ice-cream place once from my house with my kids, never again, that roundabout is impossible to cross. It is almost un-passable. It is a shame because the last time we went for ice-cream there was a lack of car parking spaces as it was that busy. A cycle route incorporating a safe crossing place would be awesome”

“The Holdingham roundabout can be challenging for motorists at times, let alone cyclists, wheelchair users and walkers. This bridge seems to be a good scheme which should be of general benefit and improve connectivity and safety.

To take the discussion on, which busy roundabout or crossing in Lincolnshire should be the next to get this high degree of separation of different types of users, when funds are available ?”
