Pavements often safer for cyclists

I WRITE with reference to the recent article on October 21 regarding cycling on footpaths, and this does include cycling on the seafront promenades.

As responsible cyclists we quite agree with the need for safety.

But, while we are being urged to reduce the use of the car, many motorists do not respect cyclists on the road, failing to allow sufficient clearance space when overtaking.

Where there is a vast, empty pavement alongside a busy road it can be safer to cycle on it.

Cycling is beneficial to health, so please, can the authorities provide more shared pavements, with appropriate signing as on Burgh Road, South Bracing and the new Bishop's Court estate?

Also, to allow cycling on the seafront in winter at least, with painted designation lines, or for a period of time, to enable those of us who wish to keep fit to do so safely.
