Pirate radio reunion rocks Tom's boat
A pirate radio station DJ from Lincolnshire will be on the crest of a wave when he celebrates a new film which tells the story of Radio Caroline.
Richard Curtis's The Boat That Rocked is based on the events of 1966 when commercial stations broadcast from boats in international waters to defy a mainland ban.
Radio Caroline was the most famous station of the era and Tom Edwards, one of its original presenters, is due to join his former colleagues for a reunion show over the Easter weekend.
They will broadcast from a former lightship called LV18 – the home of Pirate BBC Essex – moored in Harwich Harbour.
The Caroline Organisation was originally founded by music industry businessman Ronan O'Rahilly, later merging with Radio Atlanta which was owned by Major Oliver Smedley. It then became Radio Caroline South.
"It's amazing that people still remember us," said Mr Edwards, turning 64 on Friday.
"We have a whole new audience of listeners from a new generation who find it hard to believe there was a time when there were no pop radio stations on air."
Mr Edwards began is career in pirate radio with Radio City under his boss and friend Reg Calvert, who was actually shot dead in 1966 by Major Oliver Smedley.
"The shooting of Reg marked the end of pirate radio really." said Mr Edwards.
"If it hadn't been for Reg I don't think I would have become a broadcaster."
The end of Radio City, a station based on a maritime fort off the Kentish coast, meant Mr Edwards moved to Radio Caroline and got to meet some of his broadcasting heroes.
"I was a young man and I was taking my life in my hands. The world was my oyster and it still is," said Mr Edwards.
"We changed the sound of radio to what it is now."
Mr Edwards will be boarding the LV18 on April 11.
The show will be broadcast to the world via webcams and a live Internet feed.
