Phase one was a complete refit of screen three which was completed earlier this year.

Phase two was a re-style of the main entrance foyer, including, lighting effects, a new refreshment counter and a separate box office, together with a pre-booked ticket collection point.

Gerald Parkes, Director of Parkway Cinemas, which owns the Playhouse said: "The new ticketing system will be bedded in this week and will then be connected to the Internet, at which point patrons will be able to buy tickets in advance via our website www.parkwaycinemas.co.uk.

"I suspect this new service may prove particularly useful for the popular one day 'live-stream' presentations by the National Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet, together, of course, with the big movie titles such as the new Bond film Skyfall which opens on October 26. "

Phase Three, of the planned improvements, a re-style of screen two, is now under way and will include new seating and a bigger screen.

The work is being completed by Andrew Blades Building Services and the architect is Tom Cannon of CDC Architecture.

Cinema Manager, Kirsty Dobson said: "Although the construction process is challenging, we have been delighted with the positive feedback from our customers who clearly welcome the investment in their local cinema."
