Police hunt 'nighthawkers' after dig site raid
Illegal metal detecting may mean that the full story of the Roman occupation of the Marton site may never be known.
Police are investigating after illicit 'nighthawkers' gained access to the dig on Saturday, September 22.
"There were definitely nighthawkers digging without permission and they made quite a mess, with holes all over the place," said Lincolnshire County Council's historic environment officer Sarah Grundy.
"It's a great shame because genuine metal detecting enthusiasts have already been very helpful during walks over the site with landowners' permission.

“Ditto - they are Parasites to the true Metal Detecting folks and clubs - local Lincoln club will also kick out any know night hawkers if any information was to come to light.”

“Nighthawkers are Not metal detectorists. They are thieves going equipped to steal and all hobbyists that belong to clubs and other part time detectorists see them as criminals. So please do not associate club members and other detectorists with their activities. We will not allow anyone suspected of nighthawking to join any club and if a member is found to partake in such activities he/she will surely be kicked out. So please do not call them Metal detectorists as they are not!
