A third also rated the condition of their local roads as poor, very poor or "terrible", according to the AA/Populus survey of nearly 23,000 drivers.

Meanwhile, the Asphalt Industry Alliance says councils may need as much as £10.5bn to bring the country's "crumbling roads" into good condition.

Only 10% of those who took part in the AA survey rated their local roads very good or excellent, with the lowest ratings going to Scotland and the Yorkshire and Humber

AA president Edmund King said: "Our findings are deeply worrying and show that UK drivers are once again experiencing a bad pothole season after a lull last spring - perhaps with worse to come. The slight let-up in potholes this time last year may have been just a blip in the annual pothole blight that seems to beset us each spring."

Lincolnshire County Council has been successful in securing an additional £6.2 million of funding over the next two years specifically for pot hole repairs.

Councillor William Webb said the money will be spent in areas considered a priority.

“I would help when repairing a pothole that they actually did the job properly. I have reported 3 lots of potholes on the council website, and to be fair they repaired then in a matter of weeks. Sadly, due to the very poor standard of the repair, it will be lucky if it lasts more than a couple of months. The ones they repaired in Middle Rasen are so bad I reckon primary school children could have done a better job. Spend greater time, effort and money on the repairs and they will last a whole lot longer. It will work out cheaper than having to do them time and time again every few months.”

“Pot holes are an issue and cause a lot of damage to vehicles if they are hit at speed, remember to look ahead, anticipate the pot hole and drive accordingly.

My concern is the increasing number of drivers that feel its necessary to swerve into oncoming traffic in order to avoid a pot hole.... because its clearly less dangerous to crash into an oncoming vehicle than to slow down and allow your cars suspension to do its job :)”

“This happened to me on my way home from work last week. I was travelling home on the B1399 towards Fulnetby. The roads are not lit and as it was dark was unable to see the deep pothole until i had gone through it. It caused my tyre to blow ( driving less than 40mph) and had to pull up on side of road and wait an hour for the AA to arrive. When he did arrive, the first thing he did was check his van. I asked what was wrong and he advised that he had just gone through the same pothole. Whilst at ATS, I was advised that there is an option on Lincolnshire County Councils website to report a pothole which I have since done, however found the experience of being stranded rather daunting. Shall not travel that route home again.”
