Poundland to move into former Marks & Spencer store in Skegness

AFTER sitting empty for almost 18 months, a new business is finally preparing to move into the former Marks and Spencer store in Skegness.

Discount retailer Poundland will be opening its doors on Lumley Road on August 2.

The announcement means that 20 new jobs will be created in the town while also filling a major gap on the high street.

In the past, with numerous discount and charity shops in Skegness, calls have been made for bigger name stores to move in, but the town's mayor says in the current climate, any news is good news.

Councillor Mark Anderson said: "My initial thoughts have got to be, it's better a shop to be open than closed.

"I think in real terms, one would love to see another shop like Marks and Spencer but we have to live in a real world.

"In these times of austerity, when things are tough, big shops are withdrawing or closing down. We have seen on the national news retailers are closing in other towns.

"It's great to see that a pound shop is going to open on the former site and it's very important that this will create 20 jobs for our town which makes a difference."

In recent weeks, the town has seen several new independent shops such as Rutland Lighting open on Lumley Road.

Mr Anderson added: "Let's hope that these shops continue to open all year round and it's not just for the season."

To mark Poundland's opening, a family fun day will be held at the store on August 4 when shoppers will be given £1 vouchers from 10am which they can exchange for anything they like.

Shoppers can also take part in the Poundland Lucky Numbers where £100 worth of Poundland vouchers will be given away throughout the day and an in-store DJ and entertainer will be giving away balloons and sweets.

"The £1 price hasn't changed since we opened our first store 22 years ago. Our current customers love us and we are sure the Skegness shoppers will too."
