The event was well attended by the public and fellow students from The School of Access and Advanced Learning came down to support the event. Philip and Jean Sharpe whose grandson Alex Harness is taking part in the project, said they were impressed with the attitude of the students who served them, and Philip added that "the service has been lovely and that everyone was lovely and smiley".
The opening comes after months of preparation from the staff and students which included designing the menu, ordering the food and making the kitchen useable.
Sharon Ayres, the Learning Support Assistant for the NVQ Catering Course, said that The Priory Café gave the students great experience in dealing with the public, and customer service, which is something they had prepared for using role play.
She added that she was thrilled to see how well they were all getting on and said, "it's fantastic to see the customers and students interact so well".
The café is the newest addition to St. Katherine's Priory Church Heritage Centre on Colegrave Street, a grade II listed Church south of the city. The building is currently a heritage centre and community space, which offers everything from Zumba Classes to charity events, and still has a working Chapel where services are held.
The Priory Café enterprise is open Monday to Friday 10am – 3pm for snacks, hot meals and afternoon tea. A delivery service is also available and orders can be placed at: email@example.com
