Private Neil Thomas won the Best Recruit award after successfully completing the Combat Infantrymanâs Course at a training centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.
After working on a building site for ten years, Neil decided he wanted to join the Army.
He said: "I had always had it in the back of my mind that I would join up.
"With two young children at the time – we've got three now – circumstances didn't really allow.
"But I wanted to do it before I got too old.
"The course at Catterick was really good, but really hard – the hardest thing I have ever done.
"It was also the most enjoyable thing I've ever done. It was great having a different challenge every day.
"I was shocked when I was told I was the best recruit, but I did try my best and I suppose it has paid off.
"Lucy, my wife, has come around to the idea of me being a soldier now, but the rest of my family have been right behind me from the start."
He said he has been looking forward to seeing the children at his passing out parade – Caitlin is 10, Ellie is 5 and Niall is a month old.
Neil's platoon commander Colour Sergeant Michael Butcher said: "Private Thomas simply excelled on the course.
"He has been an enthusiastic trainee who is also very mature and this is shown when he helps others along or gets a grip of them.
"This is a really well-deserved award for someone who already has shown the basics of leadership."
Neil was presented with his award at the passing out parade ceremony at the Infantry Training Centre.
After some well-earned leave Neil will join his new unit the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment in Pirbright.
