Protesters from Lincoln say they will campaign against the "exploitation" of circus animals – despite an offer to view the premises.

Activist group Lincoln Animal Rights has hit out at travelling entertainment company Circus Mondao for using a selection of animals in its show.

But organisers from the circus have said anyone is welcome to look round, in a bid to prove they take care of their four-legged performers.

But protest group member Nicola O'Brien (22) has still urged people to boycott the show.

"I could see for myself that circus animals live in nice conditions, are well fed and cared for, but it wouldn't change my opinion that what they are doing is wrong," said Miss O'Brien, an animal management and welfare student at Riseholme Park campus of the University of Lincoln.

"These animals are not supposed to be trained for the purpose of earning these people money. It's exploitation."

The circus features zebras, horses, goats and camels. It will be putting on shows in the grounds of Daisy Made Ice Cream in Skellingthorpe, near Lincoln, from today until Sunday.

Activists are now trying to organise a protest outside the venue for either Friday night or Saturday.

Fighting back against the criticism, ringmaster of Mondao Petra Jackson says they have nothing to hide and treat their animals like members of the family.

She said: "These people are the bane of our lives, constantly printing out literature telling people not to go to zoos or circuses with animals in.

"We treat our animals very well and would be quite happy for anyone to come in and see conditions for themselves."

“Comparing a children to animals is illogical, animals not born in captivity/naturally rejected or indirectly abandoned rarely survive in the wild even with lots of support whereas a child could survive in the outside world whether or not he was familiar with it. These circus animals at least inside of the u.k are not usually taken from straight from their wild habitat because they are not able to do so. The activist in going on principal and not condition: would they give the same rights to all animals; cows, dogs, rats, foxes, insects, fish? Is the domestication of dogs exploitation? Using cows for milk? For food? The problem is many activists have convoluted principles which sometimes are hypocritical to some extent. Even some of you agree with killing animals but not entertainment whereby they have life and are cared for. Taking the argument of selective breeding arguably domestication is exploitation in the same sense as circus animals, domestication is simply accepted since it has been going on for so long and now "deemed natural" but it is theoretically as natural as using animals for entertainment.”

“But the circus is already going ahead because people are willing to go, and isn't paying to go and see it a form of protest in effect? How about people who don't like it don't go and those that do, go. Then it will be stopped if need be.”

“'Isn't the whole point of this protest to stop the circus having animals, ergo stopping me from going to see it if successful? Therefore a minority of a few people with views I accept, have stopped me and a number of others from going because they can't accept my view. '

As we live in an democracy, and as you feel so strongly that animals should perform for your entertainment, why don't you organise a counter protest in favour of performing animals? Then you will find out if there is a majority that agrees with your view. That's how democracy works and people exercise their rights.

Personally, I think the protest is a waste of time. People will go or don't go dependant on their beliefs.

    I won't be going.”

“"JPeel, obviously tolerance and acceptance have a different meaning in your book."

Not at all. The meaning is, or should be, universal.
Obviously some desperately try to engineer a difference to fit a certain agenda of their own.”

“Jez, I wish people actually read what is written before they go of an a rant.

J, at what point did Ian say that you should be stopped going to the circus? He DID says he doesn't agree with this type of circus and doesn't go.

We DO live in a democracy and that mean they there people with opinions different from but just as valid as yours.

JPeel, obviously tolerance and acceptance have a different meaning in your book.

I don't agree with a lot of what many people say but I respect their right to have and express those opinions.

Christopher, there is a world of difference between a horse that has had its 'wild traits' selectively bred out over thousands of years and a zebra (even bred in captivity) that is only one or two generations from those roaming the veld in Africa. Sweeping generalisations just make the user look foolish.”

“"Whatever happened to tolerance and even acceptance of others who you do not agree with?"....Exactly Ian Bower.

    Protesters please take note.
Or, as most suspect, do you only have that attitude when it suits?”

“If that's the case ? stop riding horses at the Riseholme campus, and let them stay in the feilds to enjoy being bored with life.they need some entertainment like the rest of us.”

“I don't agree with Ian. If you don't agree with it don't go. Stop trying to destroy other people's enjoyment. Surely other people have a right to enjoy an event that is not harming anyone or thing? What right do the protestors have to stop me going to the circus to see the pinacle of animal intelligence just because they don't agree with it? We live in a democracy, you can vote. Make use of it.”
