She entered the event last year shortly after a mastectomy.

"When I was diagnosed I had feelings of shock and horror. I went through a bit of an emotional collapse," she said.

"After a while, once it had sunk in, I decided to tackle it and make sure I beat it.

"Last year I only had about half an inch of hair and I sprayed it pink so everybody knew I was a cancer patient.

"Lincoln was the hub of all my treatment and they were fantastic so I was determined to do the event there."

Mrs Stannard believes her experiences with her illness and the previous Race for Life have left her in a strong position for the future.

"Last year meant a lot to me, I even wore the trainers I used at the event to walk down to the operating theatre.

"I am really positive about the future now. I have been through the tough times and it is time to look forward.

"Being positive is the only way to tackle adversity.

"I can't wait for this year's event and I am going to give it my all," she said.

In addition to Mrs Stannard, around 2,500 women have signed up to complete the 5 kilometre course at the Lincolnshire Showground.

Most women walk the course in about an hour.

Organisers hope they will raise a total of £180,000 from Lincoln's race.

Alison Mackfall, Race for Life event manager for Lincoln, said: "I feel so proud and grateful to everyone who is taking part in the Race for Life in Lincoln and to all the family, friends and colleagues who are supporting them."
