Last Sunday saw Spilsby racer Rachel Pearson competing in the latest round of the Mk2 Golf Gti Championship at her home circuit of Cadwell Park.

This would be her first race of the season due to a tight budget and teething problems earlier on in the year with the car, which is run by Spilsby based team Franklin Motorsport.

Things had gone well in testing on Friday and Rachel was easily beating her own times from when she'd last raced at Cadwell in 2011, with some new tyres fitted the times continued to improve.

Sunday saw a bright and glorious morning as she headed out for her qualifying session.  Throughout which Rachel and Current championship leader Alex Harris keenly swapped places for the top honours in class separated by jus two thousants of a second as they started the final lap. It was on the very last lap of qualifying that Rachel managed an absolute blinding lap of 1:51.803, 8 tenths of a second quicker than Harris to give her 12th overall and the class pole for 8v cars.

Encouraged by her qualifying performance Rachel took to the grid for the start of race one believing that a podium finish was a real possibility. As the lights went out she made a great start managing to put a 16v car between her and the hard charging Harris the was enough to give a slight break until a safety car period at half distance closed up all of the field again, in the final four laps after the restart Harris did all he could to try and pass but had to settle for second at the flag as Rachel celebrated her first ever car racing win.

Race two again saw Rachel on the class pole, which after a startline incident the race was red flagged to remove several cars from the circuit. The restart wasn't quite so good for Rachel and Harris managed to get along side her going into coppice  and take first place, but she fought hard and stayed with him for the remainder of the race but never quite had the opportunity to make a move on him. Taking the flag just over 2 seconds behind the championship leader.

Rachel had a fantastic weekend which wouldn't have been possible without her sponsors C C Recovery, Nettleham Building and Tiler. Anyone who might be interested in sponsoring for the last rounds of 2012 can email Rachel@franklin-motorsport.com for more info.

All the action from the Golf Gti Races at Cadwell Park can be seen on the 21st September at 18:20 on Motors Tv Sky channel 413.
