The weekend saw the first round of the blue riband cup competition in the Sills and Betteridge Lincoln Sunday League take place, the Ron Eaglen Cup.

Traditionally, this has thrown up some massive giant-killing acts and this year was no exception as Division Five side Railway Inn Thorpe outplayed and out-scored Division One leaders South Clifton, beating them 4-1.

Going 3-0 down after 20 minutes with goals from Sam Booth, Leigh Buff and Andy Wheatley, South Clifton were unable to recover and Dan Taylor capped a fine team performance for Railway Inn 10 minutes from time.

Other top Division One sides to fall were second-placed Nettleham, who went down 6-2 at Hykeham Plough from Division Two, and third-placed St Helens, who were defeated 3-1 at North Scarle from Division Three.

Another Division Three side to progress at the expense of Division One opposition were Dynamo Varsity, who overcame Bassingham, winning the penalty shoot-out 4-1 after a monster 6-6 scoreline after extra-time.

Holders Welton S&SC were handed the toughest possible tie to regain their trophy away to GE Rustons and their fears were justified as four goals from Martin Goldacre and two from Jason Tinkler gave Rustons a 6-2 victory.

There were two other all-Premier Division ties, with FC Hunters Leap beating FSC Victory 3-0 and Adelaide overcoming Scothern 6-3.

Last year's finalists, Ruston Sports, began their quest to go one further with a comfortable 5-1 win at Victory Athletic. Other top tier sides to progress were Gatehouse, 8-0 winners against AFC Harpars; Metheringham, who beat Wheatsheaf Vulcan 2-0; and FVA Jerusalem, who edged past Waggon and Horses 1-0.

Despite being a division below their opposition, Sleaford Raiders eased past Division One basement side 4-1. Similarly, AFC Rustons, from Division Six, were 4-1 conquerors of lowly Division Five side Metalhead Town.

Crows Athletic had a welcome 8-0 win against Claytons Athletic and wins by Ivy Tavern, Branston, AFC Hykeham, Horncastle Town, Black Swan Coningsby, Monks Road WMC and Moorlands Railway complete the teams through to the next round.

There was still some league action on Sunday as Metheringham 2nds went up to third in Division Three by defeating Cherry Willingham 3-1 to end their mini-run of form.

Welton S&SC Reserves took over top spot in Division Four by beating Newtoft Terriers 2-1 and GE Rustons Reserves move to fourth with the only goal of the game against Plough Sturton.

Peter De Wint missed the chance to move up the table in Division Five as they went down 4-3 to North Lindum Hawks and Greenbank remain winless after another reversal, this time 5-2 at the hands of Waddington United.

It was top versus second in Division Six but Poachers remain in command after a 4-2 win over Potterhanworth. AFC Harpars missed the chance to move into second as they lost 5-1 to Bailgate Reserves. Welton celebrated their first win of the season, beating Lincoln Claytons Reserves 5-0.
