WORK has begun to repair fire damage at a rendering plant in Skellingthorpe.

A Hughes and Son Ltd suffered severe fire damage following an explosion on Sunday, July 25.

The rendering and bone meal plant caught light at about 9.45pm that evening and ten crews battled through the night to put out the blaze.

Now plans are in place to resume production at the plant in five weeks.

David Lamping, director of claims at Cooke and Mason insurance brokers, said: "Big fires are often an opportunity for redevelopment, re-engineering and growth.

"The plant will be up and running again in five weeks, which will restore production.

"The work being done now is a forced modification to provide capacity, but the replacement of the fire damaged building is a long-term project.

"Once production is up-and-running, and customers are happy, it'll be a case of looking at a redesign and a rebuild."

“Thanks 'Missouri Marten' for your admission that the factory emits vile smells. For your information, when we bought our house in Skellingthorpe, this monster was only a small (albeit stinking) farm. The smell increased along with the size but thankfully reduced due to pressure from the local authorities. You might like to put the effectiveness of this to the test by driving past during the heat of Summer with your windows down, then make your own mind up!
As for the workers, we would all like to walk out of our houses and into work but most of us have to travel. If this industrial unit was moved away from a residential conurbation by three miles, they would not suffer any more than travelling into Lincoln, as most others in the village do.”

“"Ask yourselves this question, if such an enterprise were to apply for planning permission today, would it be granted?"

Ask yourself this question. If you didn't like the idea of living close to a premises that produced vile smells, would you buy a house in just such a location? Oh, wait a minute...you did.”

“As predicted, the first statement to include the word 'growth'.
We can only hope that the planning authorities have the courage to take this unique opportunity to curb any such aspirations the firm may have.
