Restoration of Heckington Windmill waits on £990k Heritage Lottery funding
THE sails of Heckington Windmill are almost turning again as the council complete the rebuild and restoration of the former weathered sails.
The windmill - a grade one listed building, which is the only surviving eight-sailed windmill in the country, has been out of action for the last two years while its sails have been rebuilt and are currently being stored by Lincolnshire County Council.
The Heckington Windmill Trust is waiting for a Heritage Lottery bid of £990,200 to go through which should be apparent in a few weeks time to complete the full restoration - a project which will cost £1,183,668 in total.
Jim Bailey, the mill manager said: "It's very exciting. If all goes well we will have the mill up and running fully by early next year.

"The mill's been here for 200 years so we are happy to wait little a bit longer."
The organisation's bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to buy and restore the buildings associated with the mill was successful in the first round and a final decision next month will hopefully lead to the mill fully functioning once more.
Mr Bailey said: "For the last two years Sibsey Trader Windmill in Boston have been milling our grain and we then brought the flour back here to sell.
"When the restoration is complete we plan to trade with local bakeries and pubs so we will expand the amount of flour that we mill."
Plans for the windmill which was first built in 1830 include reinstating the old bakehouse, providing a full history of the heritage of the site via interpretation and displays and providing better car parking and toilet facilities.
The windmill is currently open for tours every Sunday and local schools often visit for a tour and an insight into the history of the iconic structure.
On the weekend of Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9 Father Christmas will be at the mill and there will also be a Christmas craft fair and tours of the mill as usual.
