Retired racers are the couch potatoes of the dog world
BOSTON based charity the Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust (LGT) has celebrated the start of a new decade by revealing a record re-homing year.
In 2009 the trust found homes for 140 retired racing greyhounds beating its 2008 record of 123.
And if the beginning of 2010 is anything to go by the charity should be well on its way to beating the record again, as four dogs have already been found homes.
LGT chairman Kev Stow told the Target: "2009 was an incredible year for us. We have a dedicated team of volunteers who work hard to find homes for the dogs and their hard work has certainly paid off.
"Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They are a pedigree breed and after their racing careers they like nothing better than to spend their retirement snoozing.
"They really are the 40mph couch potatoes of the dog world and only need two 20-minute walks a day."
In the UK approximately 10,000 greyhounds retire from racing each year normally between the age of three and four.
LGT rehomes many of these dogs throughout Lincolnshire and since it started in 1998 has found homes for more than 850 greyhounds.
Keith Barnes from Antons Gowt adopted Domino in October and said: "My wife and I, who are retired, have always had dogs but had never considered a greyhound until we read an article about them.
"We got in touch with LGT and met Domino who is the easiest to care for dog we have ever had.
"He is young and playful but so chilled and lazy too. We would recommend a greyhound to anyone considering taking on a dog."
All the dogs rehomed by LGT are neutered and have been vaccinated as well as treated for fleas and ticks.
They also leave the trust with a leather collar, lead, coat and book about greyhound care.
