MOTORCYCLE hero Steve Plater has revealed he had no intention of quitting the sport following his life-threatening accident as he declared plans to win more championships.

The Lincolnshire racing legend returns to action this weekend at his home track for the Cadwell Park round of the British Superbike Championship.

Plater insists he is fit and ready to battle for a podium spot in Monday's British Superstock 1000 race, just over three months after suffering a broken neck and arm in a practice smash ahead of the North West 200 road races in Northern Ireland.

And in the long-term, the HM Plant Honda star has revealed he wants to return to the Superbike series.

"As far as I'm concerned, I'm still capable of winning, so I'm going to keep pursuing the ultimate goal, which is to win championships," declared the Woodhall Spa-based rider, who won the British Supersport crown in 2009.

"I'm not really sure what I'll be riding next year. Obviously I'd like to ride a Superbike again. I still feel I'm competitive.

"As long as there are no repercussions from my injuries, there's no reason why I can't win another championship."

In the short-term, Plater is desperate to end his injury-disrupted season on a high.

The 2009 Senior TT winner was leading the Superstock series prior to his accident after winning two of the first three races.

"I had 19-point lead when I crashed," he added. "I'm not saying I would have won, but you would have been silly to bet against me.

"The Superstock Championship is very important to Honda. That's why they placed me in that championship and we were ruling the roost at the beginning of the season, but obviously things have changed since my injury.

"But I've got four rounds left. Hopefully I can get back on the podium and prove how good the Honda Fireblade is."

However, Plater insists meeting his Cadwell target of a podium place will be far from easy.

"I'm not planning to ride round like a muppet," he declared. "But it will be far from easy just to get a podium.

"The guys in the Superstock Championship are going very fast.

"They were half a second under the lap record at Brands Hatch (the last round of the series), which is phenomenal.

"But that's where I want to be, standing on that podium."

“What with the return of Steve and the Lowes boys shenanigans, I'm really looking forward to Cadwell. £24 for an entire day, free parking and you can take your own food and drink - far better value for money than watching the losers at Sincil Bank for 90 minutes :-p”
