Reusable nappies trial could save Lincolnshire families £500 and reduce landfill
NEW parents can potentially save up to £500 thanks to a new initiative by Lincolnshire County Council.
Trial packs of reusable nappies are available throughout Lincolnshire, for parents and carers who want to try them out for their babies.

Lincolnshire County Council is funding the scheme and hopes to reduce the amount of nappies being thrown away into landfill.
Sustainability education officer Victoria Frodsham said: "The nappies have been very popular so far, parents are surprised how easy they are to use.

"These trial kits give people the opportunity to try different styles of reusables, from the traditional terry square to the more modern and easy-to-use nappies."
Using real nappies saves money and using the natural fabric alternative reduces the 9,500 tonnes of disposable nappies currently being thrown into county landfill sites.
Using cloth nappies can typically save families around £500 a year, even more if they keep them for subsequent children.
This includes the cost of washing and drying the nappies which come in a variety of sizes and colours, and can be loaned for three weeks.
Through the Lincolnshire Real Nappy Network, volunteers throughout the county are on hand to give support and advice to parents or carers who want to try reusable nappies with their babies, but aren't sure how to go about it.
Victoria added: "We've got some fantastic volunteers who can be contacted via the Facebook page, Lincolnshire Real Nappy Network and are happy answer any questions."
As an added incentive, the county council is offering a £30 cash back scheme for Lincolnshire residents who spend £50 or more on real nappies.

“Recycling nappies is also considered to be a viable alternative but any waste decision must now consider the fact that LCC have decided to spend a record £140 million on the Hykeham waste incinerator which also brings the obligation to provide 150,000 tonnes each year for burning or the ratepayer faces financial penalties.
The reality in Lincolnshire is that decreasing waste creation and the current recycling and waste streaming data points to the fact that removal of 9500 tonnes of nappies will impact on the incinerator operation with possible financial consequences for the ratepayer”

“Washing a nappy and reusing it what a revolutionary idea !
What will they think of next, washing glass bottles and refilling them instead of smashing them in bottle banks, melting them down and then making exactly the same thing again.”
