ROB SCOTT has allayed concerns over Marc Newsham's fitness ahead of tomorrow's friendly at Sheffield FC.

Last season's 29-goal top scorer has missed the Pilgrims' first two pre-season games through injury.

Newsham is also doubtful for tomorrow's trip to Evo-Stik League Division One (South) side Sheffield, but could figure at Stamford on Tuesday or Belper tomorrow week.

"Marc's injury is short-term and we should be looking to involve him again in the next week," confirmed Scott, who has seen his side begin pre-season with impressive victories over Grimsby and Grantham.

"I'm not 100 per cent sure what the terminology is, but he's got a tight muscle, which runs from his hip to outside of his knee, which is making his knee very sore.

"It may have something to do with the running on hard ground he's been doing, but that should ease off with treatment from Katie (Cooper, the club physio).

"We'll look to do a bit of work with him tomorrow and see how he reacts."

United do have plenty of cover up front with Spencer Weir-Daley, Danny Davidson, Mikel Suarez and new signing Miles Hunter vying for starting slots.

The prognosis for defender Liam Parker, however, is not as encouraging.

Scott has conceded the centre-back could be set for an extended spell on the sides with a back injury.

"There's a concern with Liam," admitted the Pilgrims joint-manager.

"He's got a problem with his back which comes and goes.

"That's something we're going to have to address if it's going to be long-term. It could be a problem.

"He's seen two different osteopaths this week and got conflicting reports. One said he was okay and released him, the other said he could have a bulging disc.

"If that's the case, it's a waiting game. Unfortunately we can't afford that time, we'll just have to monitor it over the next week or so.

"It's difficult because these boys work for a living and Liam's got a very physical job (he fits conservatories) and doesn't get a chance to rest it, which is unfortunate.

"But these boys have to earn a living, they don't just turn up and play football."
