Motorists are facing heavy congestion when a major rat-run through Lincoln is shut for four weeks.

Rookery Lane in Lincoln will be closed as of today, preventing access by motorised transport.

Staff at businesses in the area say they were only made aware of the plans two days ago, and were left fearing the potentially negative effects the closure could have on trade.

Paula Taylor, the owner of Hair By Edwin, a salon which first opened its doors on Rookery Lane in 1963, said that the closure would definitely have a negative effect.

"If people think there's going to be a problem for parking or access, then they're going to avoid Rookery Lane altogether," she said.

"We only received the letter on Monday, so we haven't had any time to prepare at all.

"The council could have given us a bit more notice and information – the letter we received says nothing about any potential diversion route.

"Most of our clients are based in North Hykeham, meaning they'll be coming from the end that's going to be shut off.

"A lot of people are going to be forced to cancel or reschedule any appointments they may have, because there hasn't been any sooner notification. No-one has known what's happening."

Lincolnshire County Council senior highways officer Dave Underwood said: "The improvement works to the Rookery Lane/Newark Road signalised junction due to start on Wednesday, January 6, are part of ongoing Community Travel Zone improvements across the city following consultations with local residents.

"The works are to improve the pedestrian crossing facilities on Newark Road at this junction, but moreover the works will include a new pedestrian crossing facility on Rookery Lane which emerged as a high priority to local residents.

"Local diversions will be put in place and lane closures will be required on Newark Road, however these will be kept to a minimum.

"The local diversion for Rookery Lane will be via Moorland Avenue, Tritton Road & Newark Road. Access to the shopping area on the junction will be available throughout the works."

“I wish to thank City Councillor Keith Weaver for his relentless campaigning to get this work done. He has done a sterling job for the residents of the area in raising this issue with the County Council, the end result being this road chaos! Only joking, resulting in this much needed pedestrian crossing. Well done Keith. I hope the people of Moorland ward realise how much work you have put in and vote for you later this year.”

“here we go again!! whilst i agree work needs to be done on this junction do they really need to shut both sides of the road at the same time. as for it saying in the paper its a 'rat run' what a load of rubbish, it is a highway and not a rat-run. what other way is there to get to brant road from boultham area, we are not allowed to go down westwick as thats a 'rat-run', we cant go down de-wint thats a rat run!! all i can see is chaos if they put a pedestrian crossing close to the shops, its too near the lights and will be quite dangerous in my eyes, so many people jump the lights there already as at times they only allow 3 cars across, what risk is that putting to pedestrians. whilst i do agree a crossing is needed it should have put a little further down rookery lane, if the residents are in that much of a need they wouldnt mind walking a few extra feet for safety surely. and as for the previous post, i dont consider myself a whinger purely putting a point across to which i am totally entitled as are you.”

“Thank you once again Lincolnshire County Council for making the traffic flow through Lincoln / Hykeham a complete and utter nightmare for everyone concerned in the south of the city.

Living just behind ASDA i have two choices to try and get into Lincoln, one is the horendously busy and notorious ASDA roundabout on Newark Rd, and the other is going through to Hykeham / Lincoln road and upto Rookery Lane Junction.

It doesnt matter what time of day you go out, you are faced with traffic backed upto the Forum, and getting onto the roundabout is the biggest challenge of all. Now i cant even go up Hykeham / Lincoln rd, as when you get there, the roadworks turn you left back down Newark Road. You cant even travel down Rookery Lane, meaning from 7-10pm in the morning, 12-1pm in the afternoon, and 3-7pm in the evening will just be one mass traffic jam!!

Imagine if the St Aidens throughfare was still blocked, it would make Hykeham just one long traffic jam on all the main roads through.

The lights / junction at Hykeham Rd / Moor Lane, takes a good 10mins to get through in the morning if you want to get out to that way.

I am trapped in North Hykeham....marvelous.

Please, please, please can you plan your roadworks more efficiently, or better still, can we have the bypass extended to the eastern side of the city aswell.

I doubt, either of the above will happen in my lifetime!”

“The repairs to the block paving in the Claskengate area of Lincoln was supposed to start on 4th January lasting two weeks. This now will start on 25th January due to the bad weather. It will be closed for traffic but only allowing access for business and local residents. Hopefully, this will be the last for that area!”

“This junction has been in need of improvement for a long while because of its tightness and restricted width and the loss of a few haircuts seems a small price to pay for an increase in road safety. I commend the local authority for finding the time and money to carry out these works.”

“Oh dear I Do despair. The improvements to this junction have been needed for a long while and the loss of a few blow-dry's seems a small price to pay for an improvement in road safety. This junction has always posed a problem due to the constraints imposed by its tightness and lack of width and any efforts to improve this must take precedence over the loss of the odd haircut .I commend the local authority for finding the time and money to carry out this work.”

“The Council are usually pretty good at this advanced notice kind of thing. Look at Bailgate, for example - the signs have been up for weeks, and that road is meant to be access only anyway (not that you'd know, judging by the amount of traffic going through it - that's a real rat run, not Rookery Lane).”

    “What utter nonsense.

Are people now day so incapable that they can¿t cope with a little disruption or variation in their lives?

If people are travelling from Newark Road instead of using Rookery Lane drive to Tritton Road and then turn up Boultham Avenue opposite Sainsbury¿s. There is more than one road leading to the shops in this area.

Grow up and don¿t be such wimps.”

“Advanced notice about this would have helped customers and traders. Very many people use the banks and shops at Rookery Lane. If it were not for the Echo article, we would have not known about the limited access, until found ourselves stuck.”
