AFTER raising nearly £30,000 to support serving and ex-service people last year, the Sleaford and district branch of the Royal British Legion is now facing a dilemma.

The organiser of the branch’s annual poppy appeal has had to step down after seven years in the role and without a new organiser to take over and more volunteers to help out the branch could be heading for a major drop in donations.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Ian Graham, chairman of the Sleaford & District branch of the Royal British Legion is appealing for people to help with the appeal.

Ian Graham, chairman of the branch said: “The money raised from our branch helps to fund the welfare work which cares for the needs of both serving and ex-serving members of the Armed Forces of every age group and generation and the demands of the legion are surprisingly increasing.

“Our former poppy appeal organiser did a tremendous job with helping to raise so much and our contribution as a branch has risen from about £7,000 to £29,000 in the last few years. We would hate for the appeal in Sleaford to falter.”

The commitment in terms of time volunteers can give is as great or small as individuals are able to make.

Most of the time needed will be around the period of Remembrance Day, however there is behind-the-scenes work that goes on throughout the year.

Mr Graham added: “It’s a real team and community effort.

“Volunteers will help to prepare collecting trays and tins; knock on doors; and help to run stalls at markets and events like the Rauceby War Weekend.”

“I think there are a lot of people who don’t really know what the Royal British Legion does and how important it is.”

To learn more about what the branch does or to volunteer get in contact with the branch secretary on 01529 410174 who will be able to answer any questions.
