Sainsbury's store plan for Louth thrown out by councillors
PEOPLE opposed to a supermarket convenience store are celebrating after planners refused permission for a proposed retail and housing area.
The majority of East Lindsey District Council's planning committee members voted against plans for a Sainsbury's Local store, two smaller retail units and six town houses on land at the former Brown's garage on Newmarket.

Despite a large number of objections – including a 585 signature petition – the application had been recommended for approval as Lincolnshire County Council's highways department raised no objection.
But councillors who knew the area deemed the location, with the exit of the site on the unadopted Watts Lane, as dangerous.

Giles Walter, director of Metaris Properties Ltd, had stressed the plan was for a convenience food store as part of a neighbourhood centre.
He said: "It is small in scale and will never be a traditional supermarket. It will not impact on the town centre. It will bring a brownfield site back into economical use and bring employment to this area of Louth."
Patrick Purves, speaking against the application on behalf of the Pleasants' Residents' Association said they were already well served by three convenience stores, a garage and a pharmacy all within walking distance.
Sarah Dodds, speaking for Priory Ward residents, said: "Although highways recommend approval, the people who live and breathe that area know it is the wrong decision. It is a tragedy waiting to happen in the eyes of local residents."
Councillor George Horton speaking for St Michael's ward said the store was not needed.
He said: "It is not needed or wanted. There are three family businesses there. This would put livelihoods at risk. They serve the community well."
Councillor Terry Knowles objected to the application.
He said: "I do use this route quite a lot and it is dangerous. It always strikes me as an accident waiting to happen. To put more infill there with shops and houses will be absolutely crass."

“@Gnome_Chomsky: It shouldn't be a problem. That area of town is at the top of the hill, not in the area that floods (specifically, the area that floods is at 22-26m above sea level and this area is at 42m). Most of the land in question is already covered in concrete foundations from the building that used to stand there.”

“I live only several houses up from this and while I'm neutral on the store idea, I'm in strong support of them turning that land into a park or something community oriented somehow.
A joint-use park and skatepark would be ideal. Sticking a skatepark at Wood Lane is not the solution. The kids are already on this site, they're local to this site, and from what I can tell so far, haven't been causing any grief at all.
Situated on the main road and right next to the doctor's surgery and the existing shop, this could be a lovely little community space (unlike the deserted park tucked down the end of Watts Lane). Whatever we do, let's not lose the chance to have a new community space in an area of Louth that sorely lacks it by building flats or houses all over it.”
