Sainsbury's supermarket plan for Louth branded as 'lunacy'
A PROPOSED supermarket on a busy Louth road will drastically affect nearby businesses and be dangerous for road users, according to councillors.
Louth Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee unanimously objected to plans by Metaris Properties Ltd which wants to build a Sainsbury's Local store and six town houses at the former Brown's garage site on Newmarket.

The application also includes two smaller retail units, parking for 20 vehicles including one disabled bay, and the access will be via the Newmarket Medical Practice with vehicles leaving the site by the unadopted road, Watts Lane.
The applicant also proposes to move the bus stop closer to the Watts Lane junction and pedestrian crossing.

Councillor Gus Robertson said: "I live in that area and there is no need for this place. It will be dangerous. There are three stores, three pubs, Morrisons down the road. It is a busy, busy road and it is lunacy to even contemplate putting a supermarket there."
The Mayor, Brian Burnett, said: "Traffic will be going in and out so close to the doctor's surgery when it is already difficult to get out from the doctors. It will threaten the viability of a whole range of shops on that road where there are three or four successful small businesses. It is not just competition for one shop, it will be competition for several shops."
Councillor George Horton said he has witnessed several near accidents near the site now.
He said: "I think the entrance to Watts Lane is unacceptable. If nothing else, a lot of people's livelihoods are at risk here."
Councillor Andrew Leonard added that this is the wrong location for a supermarket.
He said: "A lot of people think Louth Town Council don't want supermarkets but this is a classic example of being a completely wrong site."
The application will be determined by East Lindsey District Council's planning committee in due course.
