Sam Lowes was forced to settle for second place at the opening round of the World Supersport Championship after being edged out by three-time champion Kenan Sofuoglu.

Pole-sitter Lowes was favourite for victory at Phillip Island after dominating practice and qualifying on his Yakhnich Yamaha.

However, following an exciting battle between the pair, which saw them trade places on numerous occasions, it was Kawasaki's Sofuoglu who got his campaign off to a winning start.

The race confirmed pre-season expectations that the title will be a two-way fight between the young Lincoln rider and the experienced Turk.

    As I see it a second in the first race of a long seaon is o.k. I'll be watching Sams progress as the season unfolds and hope that he is at the top of the table at the end of the season. I will also be watching his twin brother Alex in the British superbikes championship. And not forgetting Jack Harvey from Bassingham in GP3 this year.

    This could be a brilliant year for the Lincoln area in motorsport and I wish all 3 the best of luck.”
