Christmas market-goers will this year be able to get a decidedly German take on their favourite Lincolnshire foods.

This year's event, which runs from Thursday, December 3, to Sunday, December 6, will feature the Neustadt Village – an area themed after Lincoln's twin town – found under an umbrella marquee on the corner of Westgate and Union Road.

The giant food court offering bratwurst sausages, a hog roast with strudel apple sauce, German bread and goulash and German wines and beers is the brainchild of Gary Burnett, the boss of Double M Catering, which provides food and drink for the Drill Hall and Lincoln City FC.

"The council wanted a local person to offer something a bit different," he said.

"They were looking for a themed food court area, possibly Victorian, but we thought it should be German because the market is built around a German market ethos.

"We've got traditional foods including bratwurst and bockwurst sausages made by Fosters butchers in Monks Road and a traditional hog roast.

"It will be served in German-style bread with apple strudel sauce.

"Obviously we'll also have coffee and special cakes like apple strudel and caramel chocolate and it's all under a 17m long by 12m wide umbrella marquee – like they would have over there – which will seat at least 80 people.

"I've just been to Neustadt for three days and met the council there and they've given us posters and banners to put up and T-shirts to wear.

"We have lots of German crafts at the market already, but this is just a bit different because nobody was offering the German food."
