Sausage fight brought to MEP
WEST Lindsey pork producers have secured the support of an MEP in their fight to get protective status for the Lincolnshire sausage.
Award-winning businesses including Jane and Terry Tomlinson's Redhill Farm at Blyton Carr near Gainsborough and the Ward family's Uncle Henry's farm shop at Grayingham Grange are supporting a seven-year campaign.
The Lincolnshire Sausage Association has been trying to get "protective geographical indication" for the sage-flavoured banger for seven years.
It would mean that the delicacy would only be able to be made by butchers to a specific recipe within Lincolnshire's borders. But last month, the application for the status was turned down by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Defra who claimed that the Lincolnshire sausage did not have a strong enough connection with the county to warrant the status. The decision was criticised by the Tomlinsons – and the LSA has launched an appeal against the decision after more than 1,000 people signed a petition.
UKIP MEP Derek Clark has thrown his weight behind the campaign after travelling to London to meet civil servants.
"Other EU member states fall over themselves to help their food-makers enjoy this status," said Mr Clark. "It is the same rules which protect Champagne, Gorgonzola or hundreds of other European products. I found it inexplicable the UK's food and agriculture ministry won't help British foods in this way. So we travelled to meet them, find out why and ask them in the interests of Britain to change their approach."
