Owners: Leave British bulldogs alone
The shape of British bulldogs - for so long seen as symbols of the indomitable spirit of a nation - could be about to change forever.
A new standard has been imposed by the Kennel Club because of pressure to prevent the practice of breeding unhealthy characteristics into dogs.
Since the 2008 BBC documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed, it has changed the breed standards of all registered breeds.
Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko said: "This is not a closed door. Breeders have until June to come forward with reasonable arguments and we will consider them.
"Everything we have done was based on advice from veterinary surgeons."
Owner of Kezia Bulldogs Vicky Collins-Nattrass, of Birchwood, Lincoln, said: "The Kennel Club has been under extreme pressure from the RSPCA.
"We agreed with 19 changes because we could see the point of them health-wise."
Breeders say some changes will do nothing for the health of the dogs, but will make them look like boxers, not bulldogs.
Mrs Collins-Nattrass said: "We love our dogs and want them healthy, but we don't want them to be changed beyond recognition.
"Not a day goes by that you don't see a bulldog on television. It is a British icon."
The changes include reducing the size of the bulldog's head and eliminating the jowl-like skin around the face.
Registered breeders argue this will not affect "back-street" breeders, who do not have to conform with the regulations.
"They should have compulsory health checks on everyone who wants to breed, not just voluntary ones on registered breeders," said Mrs Collins-Nattrass.

“As a child we had family bulldogs and my family still has them. They are so adorable as puppies and are happy, healthy characters with such friendly dispositions as adults. Have you heard of a bulldog attacking children/adults?They run and play like any dog, they love the snow!!!!They are instantly recognised and are used by the media to promote a British theme. The responsible breeders produce healthy dogs and this is what the purchaser will look for-they would not be able to sell the sickly ones. On a point of sales-the RSPCA will sell pedigree dogs to make money but put to sleep the mongrels!!! We have illness and disability in humans and all living species, that is nature. What a sad world it will become if all we have is a"dog"-undistinguishable from every one elses. Dog owners choose their breed because there is something about them which appeals just like a car/home,then the dog becomes part of the family and if they show them, there is pride just as if a child has won!!! The BBC has done untold damage to the dog world on the back of some sensationalism and the "pc crowd" have felt they must jump up and join in. Let's keep our bulldogs and the other breeds-they give immeasurable pleasure to lots of dog owners. Many (not all)of those who have "mongrels" come home from work, put the dog in the garden, feed it,take it a walk. Those with pedigrees will spend time walking, grooming, tending and showing, giving the dog so much love and attention and have pride in their pet. Let these owners have this pleasure-what do we want people to do with their spare time ?Sit in front of a computer/watch tv ? Keep our breeds so that we can distinguish them,we are pet lovers here, other nations are not so and subject them to living on the streets/even eating them!!!!

“I have a bulldog who is healthy and happy. He has no health problems as he was bred by a responsible breeder who wanted healthy dogs. I don't want these fantastic dogs to change, but I do think that breeders need to be as responsible as the ones that bred mine. I think that the Kennel club wanting to change the breed standard will cause more suffering and problems as less responsible breeders try to get he new breed standard right. What does it matter what the kennel club says, anyway, to the average dog on the street ?!”

“Misquoted 'Bulldogs are used in ADVERTISING everyday on TV ,Churchill,Paris Hilton is splashed everywhere with her best british friend and numerous other adverts ,the inference was this dog has been used as the British Icon and is known worldwide as such .I decline to answer the comments from people who have never lived with or owned this breed as they obviously are completely brainwashed by the media and yet another attempt to take away something else that many British people hold dear ,the reporter from this paper watched all the dogs there running and ohhh yes.. breathing some of our own dogs are aged in double figures and still have managed to live and still do live healthy lives .I will not be commenting further .I think the reporter has done a very nice balanced article ,thank you Phillipa Stewart”

“Message for Vicky Collins-Nattrass; I can't remember the last time I saw a bulldog on television, never mind a day not going by without it happening. The ridiculous in-breeding and cruelty that goes on to produce dogs that conform to some ridiculous set of arbitrary standards set by the Kennel Clubs has to stop. This is great news for dogs and animal lovers alike.”

“So you would rather the Bulldogs continue to
suffer the breathing problems that have been bread into them, courtesy of the morons who operate within the Kennel Club and their ludicrous show level demands. For god sake let the breed revert to it's original healthy natural state.”

“Owners say "Leave British bulldogs alone"".
It`s what breeders should have told themselves years ago..
If a breed standard is supposed to reflect the original working purpose of a dog and how certain physical attributes make it so successful , then they have failed miserably..
What we see today are NOT Bulldogs...
It isn`t difficult to find pictures of the original breed on the net..
Todays examples are a sorry sight by comparison....”

“The kennel club does not mean anything. It is not worth the paper it is written on.
They never even check peoples papaerwork to validate it. So i honestly cant see how this is going to work!”
