Nature lovers with £30,000 to spare have the chance to snap-up their own slice of peace and tranquillity – two Lincoln lakes.

Covering about 15.5 acres, Bungalow Lake and Lodge Lake, which border Swanholme Lakes nature reserve, are being sold at auction.

But whoever buys the privately-owned lakes needs to think again about taking a speedboat of jet-ski on to the water.

Both lakes are sites of special scientific interest as designated by Natural England, which means they can only be "quietly enjoyed".

The flooded sand bed and gravel pit lakes, full of unpolluted water undisturbed for 40 years, teems with breeding dragonfly and supports many species of underwater plants.

Amphibians, reptiles and frogs flourish in the site's sandy heath and bog.

Rob Ward, a partner with J H Walter estate agents, who is managing the auction on behalf of "a private seller", said it was a very unusual sale.

"We have sold lakes before but not lakes subject to these sorts of restrictions," he said.

"They are sites of special scientific interest, so there are going to be a lot of restrictions about their use.

"For that reason they have a guide price of just £30,000 – not a lot for your own private nature reserves.

"If the lakes were not protected they would most likely fetch £10,000 to £15,000 per acre but as they are they could be quietly enjoyed by whoever buys them."
