A DOUBLE DEC- KER bus being pulled through a town by volunteers hopes to help one man's bid to walk again.

The fundraiser in Skegness on March 24 will help boost an appeal being made by the family of Steven Huckle who suffers from osteoporosis and muscular dystrophy with brittle Bone syndrome.

After suffering a fall last year, Mr Huckle now has to use a wheelchair.

Generous people, including the team at Stagecoach in Skegness, will be pulling the double-decker bus to help raise funds towards a £12,000 target to pay for a special stand-up wheelchair for Steven which is not funded by the NHS.

Steven, 36, said: "A specialist has told me I will have a 30 per cent chance of being able to walk again if I can get this specialist chair.

"I am having physiotherapy to help me walk again and to build up my muscle strength as I have around 40 per cent muscle loss.

"Having this chair means I will be able to be a bit more independent and take off some of the pressure from my mum and dad.

"We are not the type of people to ask for things but this time, we have to if it's to help me walk again."

Steven's father Eric, who has been a bus driver for 25 years, approached his manager with the idea of a bus pull and since then, many Stagecoach staff have got on board with the fundraising event.

Steven's mum Dot said: "People have been so good. Seeing that we are in a recession, we did not think we would be able to get this going but it is all coming together and we are so pleased with the support we have received. So far, from donations, events and tombolas, we have raised £3,000."

Fundraiser Geoff Poulter said: "The date and time has now been set and now we need the people to help make it happen.

"The bus will be pulled from Yorkshire Trading at 11am up round the town, round the Clock Tower and back again.

"We've had some good people come forward wanting to get involved and we hope to get businesses and organisations to help."

Mark Mageean, Stagecoach operations manager at Skegness, said: "Most of our colleagues are getting involved. Stagecoach is glad to support this event and we hope it is a success for Steven."

Other fundraising events coming up include a fun day at the Ship Inn on Easter Sunday and a hypnotist night at the Suncastle on April 12.
