Sleaford cancer care nurse in London to Paris cycle challenge
A CANCER care nurse from the Sleaford area will follow in the footsteps of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome when cycling from London to Paris in yellow.
Steve Marsh, a nurse from Osbournby, will take on the cycle of a lifetime along with his wife Jayne to raise money for the charity.
They will cover the distance over four days, between July 24 and 27 next year.
They will cycle from London to the White Cliffs in Dover, before sailing across the Channel and cycling for two days through the French countryside to Paris, with the finish line at the famous Eiffel Tower.
The cycle coincides with the final weekend of Le Tour de France, guaranteeing a unique experience watching the riders race on the final stage of the 2014 Tour.
Mr Marsh said: "It all started when Jayne asked for a bike in order to improve her fitness.
"I got her the bike and to my amazement she loved it and rides most days now.
"I, of course, pulled her leg something terrible, calling her Brad, Sir Chris or Victoria.
"One day, when mad with me, she challenged me to have a go and what else could a man do? Off I went.
"After five minutes I was dead in the saddle. I could not believe how unfit I was.
"So the effort to improve my fitness began. We adore France and hope to spend lots of time there in retirement, so we watch the Tour every year almost as a travel programme.
"Somehow we got chatting about challenges and Paris is Jayne's favourite city in the world and she loved the thought of cycling up the Champs Elysee.
"I started to look on the internet and as soon as she saw that the Marie Curie challenge finished at the Eiffel Tower we were sold.
"We're like a couple of kids, so excited by the thought of the challenge ahead.
"We just hope the rest of the crew don't show us old folk up too badly."
The pair are currently working on background fitness before training starts in earnest in February.
They are already talking about the next challenge, which will be an event to raise more for Marie Curie and also for Adults Supporting Adults, a Sleaford-based charity for which Jayne is a registered manager.
