A SLEAFORD pub is backing a country-wide campaign to combat drink-driving over the festive period.

The Packhorse Inn, Northgate, is selling a selection of non-alcoholic 'winter tasters' to try and steer customers away from drinking alcohol and then attempting to drive home.

DON'T DRINK DRIVE: Steve Shucksmith from the Packhorse Inn with jugs of promotional non-alcoholic winter cocktails.

Steve Shucksmith, duty manager of the JD Wetherspoon pub, said: "We want everyone to enjoy themselves on a night out but most importantly we want people to be safe.

"The roads around here are notorious for accidents anyway so we need to make sure people are staying safe when they drive home.

"There's no point 'just having one' – don't risk it."

Nationally, 25 per cent of all road deaths involve the driver being under the influence of alcohol and 2011 saw the first increase in drink-drive collisions since 2002.

That means one in seven of road deaths involved drink-drivers over the alcohol limit. 1,290 serious injuries occurred when someone was over the drink-drive limit.

John Siddle, from Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership said they were delighted that JD Wetherspoon have agreed to work with them on the campaign.

Mr Siddle said: "We approached all the branches across the county and are really pleased that they are promoting the non-alcoholic cocktails on their premises.

"It's great that they want their customers to get home safely."

The 'winter tasters' available at the inn include 'The Tropical Tease' – a mix of mango juice and pineapple juice with a wedge of lime and 'The Merry Dragon' – orange juice mixed with cranberry and tonic water.

In recent years young drivers, 17 to 29-year-olds, have been over represented in drink drive casualty figures and more drivers prove positive between the hours of midnight to midday, so drivers may be over the limit the morning after a night out.

The aim of Lincolnshire Police is to test more drivers than in previous years. All drivers involved in collisions will be breath tested.

Mr Shucksmith added: "The non-alcoholic cocktails are naturally less expensive than alcoholic ones so why not be the designated driver and save the pennies and a sore head."
