A jury of six men and five women spent six hours deliberating before returning a verdict of guilty of murder.

Judge Michael Heath adjourned sentence until October 20 to allow for the preparation of a pre-sentence report on Jackson, who was 17 at the time of the killing.

After the verdict, the senior investigating officer Detective Superintendent Stuart Morrison, of Lincolnshire Police, described the case as "complex".

He said: "It was a difficult case to investigate. It was not made easier by being given different versions of what happened.

"However I have been satisfied all along that the fatal attack on David Cowley was at the hands of Aiden Jackson and no one else.

"I have spoken to David Cowley's family and they are pleased with the verdict. They say that this is a milestone and a chance to move on."

The jury heard that Jackson, whose only income was his £30 a week education maintenance allowance for attending an FE college, "strung along" Mr Cowley into believing he was interested in gay sex with the pensioner in return for cash and mobile phone top-ups.

They met at Sleaford Railway Station and Mr Cowley, of Coningsby, gave Jackson a lift to the Ballast Pits in his Smart car.

Jackson then strangled the old man who was unable to fight back because of his poor health caused by asthma and a stroke.

Jackson then took his victim's car, together with his money, phone and a ring.

Jackson spent the next day driving around in the Smart car before crashing into a parked vehicle and abandoning it.

He later took his sister and some friends to view the body alongside a lake at Ballast Pits on the outskirts of Sleaford, Lincs.

Jackson made a second trip to the Pits with his mum, who called police as a result of what she saw.

Jackson was arrested after he was found hiding inside his home.

He initially claimed to have found the body, but later said he carried out the killing with another 17-year-old.

That boy was arrested for murder, but no charges were brought against him.

The jury was told Jackson was a habitual liar and petty thief, but his defence counsel, William Harbage QC, suggested he was "a 17-year-old prat" rather than a cold-blooded killer.

“do any of you actually know him??? no!!! well stop being nosey and concentrate on your own businesses!!!"

We are society, Jackson committed a crime against society's rules and was judged by a jury (society) therefore it is our business!

@ADIKimberley, regardless of the faults etc of David Cowley it doesn't lessen the crime committed by Jackson.

I am sorry but you are condoning murder with your statement "and his killer should be given a medal not a prison sentence".”

“If you knew what abuse Cowley had inflicted on my 87 year old mother you would fully understand Cowley was not the innocent pensioner this trial makes him out to be He personaly selected my mother has one of his victims gained her confidence and over 7 years drained her of an estimated £50,000.00 he was about to be interviewed for fraud by the Department of Works and Pensions ( DWP ) on the Monday after his death over this matter and his abuse has left an 87 year old widow penniless and struggling to overcome his actions . I do not condone his killing or murder of anyone but knowing his obnoxious way of life my immediate response to the police on hearing of his murder was " I hope his death was long and painfull and his killer should be given a medal not a prison sentence " and I still stand by that statement”

“if only everyone wishing the young man ill knew the complete story and also what the victim was actualy like as he was described by the DWP to me just after his murder as " an evil evil man " maybe you would be less opinionated about Jackson ( I am not condoning the killing )”

“Youve already heard the summing up Phil - William Harbage QC, suggested he was "a 17-year-old prat" rather than a cold-blooded killer - that should halve the sentence straight away, pure brilliance. Hope nothing happens to any of these ageing Barristers when some other youngster is being..........well, "a bit of a Wally".”
