Detailed images of Lincoln residents' cars, homes and streets will soon appear on the Internet as part of Google's Street View tool.

The search engine firm's distinctive imaging cars were this week spotted cruising streets and snapping views of the city.

The controversial tool, which allows Internet users to get a 360 degree view of an area and zoom in close to residents' homes, was first launched in March with street scenes of 25 UK cities.

Google spokesman, Laura Scott, said the company had not yet confirmed a date for the Lincoln images to go live on the Internet.

"At the moment we are driving around the city and taking images," she said. "These photos will then be stitched together. It's a pretty complex, long process so we can't give an exact date that they will be available.

"We don't generally give out exact time frames because it can take many months to complete the process."

Ms Scott said she also could not confirm whether Lincoln was the only location in the county to be photographed.

So far the white Google cars, which have large imaging equipment on the roof, have been spotted in Outer Circle Road, St Rumbold's Street and John Street in the city.

Matthew Ashford (28), of John Street, off Monks Road, said he welcomed Google's visit to the city.

"I saw the Google car on my street at about 8am yesterday," he said. "I think it must have snapped me as I walked across the road. I'm definitely going to have a look when it's up and running. It's about time they got around to doing Lincoln."

“Now, Google's has finally added there street view images to Google maps.

But in Lincolnshire we've had street view images for some time now. A local web site called "SeeLincolnshire" has been offering 360 street view images for nearly a year now, and there not just our streets, they're places of interest like our parks, museums and events.

Ok, It's fun to see people falling off their pushbikes as the Google car drivers past. But the resolution is so pour and is it going to be like the Arial images, only updated every four or five year.

Google Street View, for me it's Ok, but just OK. It's there and I'll use it but it's not quite good enough to get excited about.”

“Yes, that's about right in this society, once again though nothing suprises me anymore.

Mind you it just shows you one advantage of being homeless, i bet he didnt take his camera under the university bridge and photograph there for his google site.
But this is not new there is a site where you can see satalite views of yours or anyone's house.
What do you have to do for a bit of privacy these days? dig out an underground bunker and go live there.”

“Martin, until 2 weeks ago i lived in manchester, and my house was featured on the original british release of google street view. I Didn't want my house to be visible for various reasons, too complicated to go into on here, however i emailed google through the link on the site, said that I was the house owner/occupier and didn't want it featured. I Also left contact details. Within 30 minutes, i was contacted by a Google UK representative (I Assume they were in britain, not india like you suggest, as he had the strongest liverpudlian accent it has ever been my mispleasure hearing) confirming mine and my properties details. Within 2 hours, all views of my property were removed.

If this isn't easy, i don't know what is, and before you ask, i don't have any connections with the rich and famous, and am not Paul McCartney, I'm also not on witness protection! At The time i was a production operative in a Fibreglass company in Salford.

I Hope this helps you out!

PS. Also, it won't be the whole of lincoln, if the street view goes further south than South Park Roundabout, or further east than the arbopretum I will be incredibly shocked!”

“Aside for the usual groans, this could be great for tourism, maybe. Before I went to America I went round the area on street view to have a look at it. You can do the same across Australia. Now someone in the states might think to have a look on line and see the cathedral and think 'maybe I might go see it for real'. Not likely I know, but certainly more likely than people spending hours peering at Mr Turner's house, what with it being such a point of interest.”
