Squash club bouncing for joy after firm's cash gift
Sports groups and coaches will share £1,000 after impressing judges at a local business with their talents.
Lincoln firm Danwood has hand-picked five sporting clubs and individuals to have a share in its cash giveaway, the Live Active Fund.
Lincoln Kickboxing will receive £250 of the cash to pay for new kit, Hykeham Sailing Club will use its £225 to buy smaller sails, the Bailgate Sea Scouts award of £200 will help pay for second-hand kayaks, while Sleaford Hockey has been handed £225 to buy new equipment.
The print and document supplier is giving away £6,000 – spilt into £1,000 monthly awards – to mark 40 years in business.
Squash coach Nigel Jubbs said he is celebrating after being awarded £100 to help buy equipment and pay for coaching courses. It was his third application for a share in the pot.
"I'm very pleased to have a share in this money," said Mr Jubbs, 44, who is a level 2 qualified squash coach and teaches regular classes at Eastgate Squash Club as well as short courses in local schools.
"I work with two other coaches as well, and the bid was on behalf of all of us. We want to see more people getting involved in the sport, and if we can roll it out to more areas, that will be great."
The Echo-backed Live Active Fund is available to sports clubs, community groups and athletes in need of a helping hand.
There is still one final chance to get a share in the last £1,000 up for grabs. The initiative is open to applicants of all ages and the money is available for anything from equipment and transport to training costs and competition entry fees.
Andy Brown from Danwood said: "The exciting thing about the Live Active awards is every month they go towards different sports – for this award we've managed to support watersports, hockey, squash and kickboxing, four very diverse but very important activities that are a part of our community.
"Last month Danwood was involved in the Lincolnshire Sports Partnership's sports awards as part of our 40th celebrations and it was fascinating to see first-hand how many talented, focused and inspirational athletes we have in this county.
"This is what Live Active is all about, helping our athletes of the future. Unfortunately for every award we give, we have to turn down many more, but there is still a chance to apply for an award, so we look forward to continuing to help make a difference."
The next application closing date is February 6.
