PLANS for the controversial super dairy in Lincolnshire have suffered a blow as one of the key partners withdraw their support.

Patrick Dean Ltd, of Lincoln, was one of three farming companies to back the super-dairy when plans were submitted last year.

The pig farming company intended to make over 2,000 acres of land available for the spread of slurry produced by the dairy.

But now, managing director David Knott has written to Nocton Dairies Ltd official withdrawing the company's support over concerns about negative publicity.

In the letter, Mr Knott wrote: "The directors are extremely concerned that the unwelcome public attention which is being drawn to this project will have a negative effect on the Patrick Dean Ltd business – particularly bearing in mind being pig producers."

The proposed round-the-clock milking facility is intended to house 8,100 cows, making it the largest in the UK, covering a total of 54 acres.

But some residents in Nocton have raised concerns about plans for the super-dairy – worried about the effect the slurry produced by thousands of cows could have on the local environment.

Nocton Dairies is expected to submit a second planning application imminently after its original bid was withdrawn for technical reasons.

“Perhaps now the other people who have created agreements with Willes will reconsider their options as well. People power can go along way to ruining the reputations of businesses and put them out of business..NKDC officers - you are NOT qualified to make this decision alone - do think VERY carefully about being ready to take the brunt if you give it the go ahead and things (i've no doubt) will go very bad indeed....believe me your jobs will not be easy from that point on.”

“And what if they can't get the feedstock at the 'right' price, or disease strikes, or digester needs replacing (only last 10 years) or we the public refuse to buy the rotten stuff? What then will happen to the business model? Who then takes responsibility for mopping up the debts? Or the damage done to local farmers' reputations? Nocton Dairies will cast a very long shadow upon us and what used to be a historic and beautiful jewel in Lincoln's crown.”

“There are serious concerns resulting from statements made by those involved and in particular the local MEP claiming the cows will be fed using locally grown food. The stated requirement equates to 133,000 tonnes per year, the proposal details using lucerne a 4 yr monoculture but it will require 41,000 acres at stated yield 3 tonnes/acre. The statement contradicts previous claim that feedstock would be high protein waste from Humberside bio-ethanol plant.
Water requirement at stated 136 L /day/cow equates to 1 million plus L/day. What comes out of other end equates to 240 tonnes of solids and 110 tonnes liquid/day.
Are NKDC seriously scrutinising this proposal or are we heading for another decision with impact far higher than they accept at decision day. The Councillors are happy to accept the power but apparently not the attached responsibility for impact.
Hoping due diligence and joined up thinking will be used to protect the environment and the cows.
There are many aspects of the arguments in support that fail scrutiny and NKDC cannot surely evade responsibility and divert it to others.
    Kind Regards
    Brian Wilson”

“Less land to spread slurry on and, apparently, there are questions about the availability of public money to support the 'Eco-credentials' - so no bio-digester/visitor centre etc....

This is starting to stink already!”

“Pity the farmers around Skelingthorpe don't have same concern about their reputation as David Knot.”

“Unfortunately there won't be much in the way of local jobs anyway - Willes (the main partner in this) has said so himself.”

It will be the same effect when they open it up somewhere else, only difference is, it wont be creating much needed job opening in your area.”

“We've been told the new plans were imminent since May ... if they really know what they're doing, why is it taking so long ... and if they don't, is this why some of their supporters are distancing themselves?”
