LINCOLN CITY manager Chris Sutton experimented with a five-man midfield during the Imps' 0-0 draw with Norwich last night – and revealed he was pleased with his tactical change.

The Imps stifled the Championship outfit for much of the game with Cian Hughton in particular impressing, playing just in front of the back four.

However, as well as being defensively dogged, Lincoln also offered plenty going forward and the hosts had a number of first half chances that tested visiting goalkeeper, Jed Steer.

The Imps begin their League Two campaign at Rotherham on August 7 and Sutton revealed he was encouraged by his side's performance against the Canaries.

"We got outplayed in the middle of the park against Celtic and I thought the boys who came in against Norwich did well," he said.

"When you play against sides that are possession-orientated in the middle you can get out-gunned. It is something we may look at (during the season).

"Cian did really well in midfield. We ask a lot from him for a young player and he never moans, but to a man I thought we defended well and the fans should be encouraged by the way we played.

"Joe Anyon made a couple of decent saves but in general we did okay, Drewe Broughton worked tirelessly as the lone striker and it was a good work out for every player."

“Relegation hot favourites this season im affraid. 4-2 to grimsby deservingly and cant sign decent players. we tried to sign that conell but he prefered to sign for grimsby, instead we get Facey. Get ready for watching some of most boring football ever unless we see plenty of goals from the opposition”

“One good thing has been apparent from the frienlies is that we have more options to change our tactics from within the team.
There were a lot of times last season when we appeared to only have a plan A”

“Did anybody notice how similar our black socks were to the ref's? Hope we don't keep passing the ball to the ref this season.”

“If what Pops says is true that would mean the glass half full people are just natural optimists and do not judge the situation on the evidence as they see it. In effect saying they would be optimistic about a team of chimps if that's what the manager decided to put out. As someone who is optimistic about this season being better than last I would have to say that I am basing my judgement on the signings and comments made by Sutton and the performances I have seen. I was not optimistic when Jacko was here because the evidence suggested that optimism would be misplaced.”

“Well it seems clear now that CS has a good team to play around with now and that we have moved on from last year of struggling to fill positions, to now having a full squad that allows some tactical changes.
However, I still feel that we are going to struggle all season if we dont resolve the front striking problems. Whether that be a signing or a loan player, we need someone that can bang in a quick goal here and there and we need them soon. We now have the players that can supply the balls which we lacked a lot of last year, but now we need someone to catch them and use them!

Getting there, just not there yet!!!”

“I was quite surprised by last night's performance really. We were the stronger team. Anyon didn't have much to do, but when he did, he did it well...

The defence was solid and we were great moving forwards. The only problem was the typical imps problem of not having anyone who can hit the ball between the sticks...

The clock is counting down to the start of the season, will Sutton actually bring in a goal scorer? I'm starting to feel that he won't”

“Having seen McCallum play at Grantham I must agree he does play more like a striker but has all the qualities of a winger so no doubt he will be extremely useful anywhere on the pitch. He was very quick and easy to lose track of so I can anticipate lots of problems for our opponents defences. Good luck lads!”
