The number of Lincolnshire teenage girls getting pregnant has increased by 11 per cent.

Latest figures released by the Office of National Statistics this week show that 533 girls under the age of 18 fell pregnant in 2007.

This compares to 480 during 2006.

This is the highest number of under-18 conceptions in Lincolnshire since 1998.

Of those who fell pregnant in 2007, 43 per cent went on to have abortions – the lowest number since 2004.

While the overall pregnancy rate among under-18s in England and Wales rose for the first time since 2002, Lincolnshire's rate began to rise a year earlier.

In March 2008 the Echo revealed that in 2006 there were 35.9 conceptions per 1,000 girls under 18, up from 34.8 per 1,000 in 2005.

Tony Hayer, pharmacist for Lincolnshire Co-operative was one of three health professionals who told the Echo just last week that the county's Tackling Teenage Pregnancy strategy is not working.

"Health professionals working locally have seen this coming and no matter how much money has been thrown at preventing teenage pregnancies and STIs it ultimately falls back to the teenagers," he said.

"We have to look at what's attracting them to that situation whether it's peer pressure or alcohol.

"Underage drinking plays a major role so we need to tackle that and the onus is on parents to take charge to a certain degree.

"The big issue is about respecting themselves and dignity within a relationship rather than just the mechanics of sex and contraception."

“Jo what an unfair coment just because they are so young does no way give anybody the right to say " Get an abortion or give the child away! " Kids just have baby's to get a free home, benifits and so they dont have to work. But it does'nt mean they arnt good parents. Something does however need to be done to pervent this. The jab or implant would be a good idea”

“Strange how everyone thinks that all teenage mums have a child to simply get a council house. And also it is unfair to imply that all of these pregnancies occur within dysfunctional families and are in all negative. A friend of mine had her baby at 16 and has been nothing but a loving parent who along with family support has brought him up to be a perfectly behaved toddler. And its not new, my nan had my mother at the age of 15, my nan being a devout christian was in no form an irresponsible person and to be honest my mums always been a goody two shoes. This isn't the Victorian era people. And that is the point hmmmm..... you are guessing.”

“Children seeking sexual comfort is a sign of relational dysfunction. It is clear that the TPP Action Plan and Targets are simply not working. Why? Because the root causes are never addressed. Condoms and contraception are not the answer. The roots lie in inadequate relationships within families. When we as a community can openly discuss parental communication and emotionally/physically absent parenting, we will see that it can make a difference. We allow young people to seek entertainment in sexually explicit social dramas, where sexual behaviour is loose and careless, so why should we be surprised if they model their own behaviour on them? Additionally, the government is dragging parents away from the home to work, leaving their children to fend for themselves for long periods of time. It all adds up. Children will naturally seek comfort from the wrong people, in the absence of loving parents. We are also far too frightened to talk to our own children about real love, marriage and the proper place for sexual behaviour. Having taboo subjects is a guaranteed way of leading children to seek pleasure in wrong ways. Why should we then be surprised when they become pregnant?”

“Thats the fashion though for teenagers, get pregnant and wear short tops. As I put in a post recently they should change the law so that under 16s should be forced to have an abortion or give the child away to someone who will look after the child properly.”
