Tesco shoppers trial scan-as-you-shop system in Sleaford
STAFF at Tesco in Sleaford congratulated the first lucky customer to try out the store’s new ‘scan as you shop’ product last Friday.
The new way to shop which was launched at 100 stores across the country last week means that shoppers can pick up a hand-held device as they enter the store and carry it round with them, scanning and packing their shopping as they go.
The scheme which is believed to be a faster way for customers to complete their shop due to cutting out the unloading time at the check-out, also tracks the customer’s spending as they go and reveals any offers available to them.
Dean Whiteley, store manager said: “This new system is great. It gives the customers an overall better shopping experience.

“Each customer has to scan their club-card as they pick up the hand-held device and the club-card vouchers that are sent out to customers will now be even more tailored to their individual needs.
“Plus it will even wish them a happy birthday if they happen to be in store on the big day.”
When the shopper has got all the goods they need they then take their scanner and their bagged shopping to the new payment area where they then just have to scan the ‘end of trip’ barcode, pay and go.
For customers who may be concerned about staff members being replaced by the new service Mr Whiteley explained that in fact the new service meant there would be more hours available for staff as the payment area had to be constantly manned.
The first shopper to experience the new way to shop was handed a bunch of flowers and a bottle of champagne courtesy of the branch.
