Tory MP in 'moat' expense claim
Lincolnshire MP Douglas Hogg has denied that he claimed more than £2,000 of taxpayers' cash to have the moat of his country house cleaned.
The Sleaford and North Hykeham MP also claimed £14,000 a year for a housekeeper at his Lincolnshire home, as well as expenses like having his piano tuned, his stable lights fixed and hiring a mole catcher for his garden.
Mr Hogg has become the latest MP to have his expense claims revealed in the Daily Telegraph as part of an ongoing series based on leaked material.
He has denied doing anything wrong, saying his claims were all within the rules, and he did not actually get money for the moat cleaning.
He told the Telegraph: "For most of the working week my wife and I are in London.
"We therefore employ a lady to look after the house in Lincolnshire and for similar reasons we pay for the cost of maintaining the garden."

“Nick ¿ Wake up!!; there¿s a difference between following rules, and there¿s taking the proverbial whilst at the same time trying not to be found out.
There¿s exploiting rules and there¿s ramming your face so far into the trough that a smarmy smile and an ¿I¿m sorry¿ doesn¿t wash.
These wasters are being found out for what they are, greedy self centred loaders; and on the back of a country that¿s at rock bottom.
The sad thing is, is that when they do get what they deserve at the ballot box, some corporate body will invite them as an executive on the board just to keep themselves in the government¿s back pocket.”

“Whilst these expenses claims are morally wrong, it is the rules that need changing. In my opinion the MPs involved should not be punished for simply following the rules. I'm sure most of the public exploit rules which they know to be morally wrong at least once in their lifetime.”

“No MP gives a toss about the general public, the only time you see em is when they want your vote, i think it's a bloody disgrace what they are getting money back for, & we the tax payer has to pay the bloody bill, none of them know what it is like living on the bread line, it sounds to me that they pay for naff all at all, we pay all there bills for them, all you get is 'it was a mistake, sorry, i will pay it back' they can't all be mistakes, they know damn well what they are paying for, it is damn right disgusting & they will never ever be short of money, they get a good wage, better than the poor man on the street & they still want more, i will never trust a MP ever again, not that i did before, but this is the icing on the cake, none of em will get my vote.”

“I believe I have the solution to the problem.
All homes purchased in London to enable the MP to perform his job are subject to a compulsory purchase order for the price that was paid for it.
The sitting, now tenant MP may keep the contents but they are to be removed.
All contents are to be replaced with furniture and other items taken from MOD barrack stores. The Cabinet can be classed as Officers whereas all the rest, for the purposes of furniture etc, classed as other ranks.
All of these new living quarters will come under the control of the company that manages and maintains Military married quarters and requests for repairs etc will be submitted in the same way as a married quarter at say, RAF Brize Norton.
The MPs may live rent free in these quarters but as they would always spend money on food wherever they are living, claims for food are not allowed.
Overnight accommodation and food when away from Parliament to be in accordance with the living rates for MOD personal - Rate 1 for overnight stay etc and for the amount as befits their rank.
New MPs simply take over the now vacated quarters after a suitable march out.
The Green Book is now surplus to requirements as is the Fees Office (Claims).”

“"Margaret Beckett, Housing Minister, is said to have submitted a £600 claim for hanging baskets and pot plants.
She has been accused of pocketing cash from renting out a London flat while living for free in a grace-and-favour home, and simultaneously claiming taxpayer-funded allowances on a third property.
She lived in a taxpayer-funded home in Carlton Gardens, Westminster, as Foreign Secretary in 2006. She was also claiming £106,000 in expenses for her constituency home in south Derbyshire.
According to the Commons Register of Members' Interests, she was also renting out a London flat.
Her tenant was apparently Labour MP Gillian Merron, who is also said to have claimed a second home allowance from the taxpayer."”

“Did anyone notice the Echo's front page splash regarding Gillian Merron's expenses claims...or the visit by Labour Minister Caroline Flint (Gilly's friend) who was exposed in the Telegraph yesterday? - no...?NEITHER DID WE!
C'mon Echo - whilst it seems all MPs have abused the system, the Labour Cabinet Members Darling, Hoon and Blears have taken the British Taxpayer for the greatest financial ride.
As per usual you leave yourself open to allegiations - cetainly well founded - of political bias again as we approach local elections. You never learn do you....”

“Joking aside, I understand that Mr Hogg has made a statement stating that these rumours are untrue.
Obviously if proved correct, I am sure that the Echo will print a balanced article to reflect the fact that they are not true.
And also note from his statement:
"Finally, in the interest of fairness, you might want to note my position in the overall "league table" of expenses, where I am amongst the lowest claimers in parliament - specifically 551st out of 645 MPs in 2007/8"”

“Does anyone know what these 'rules' are?
We keep hearing that expenses are 'within the rules'.
maybe the rules say someting like:
You can claim for anything you wish, any amount any number of times.”
