Train travellers in Lincolnshire faced  chaos today after more than 60 metres of high voltage cable was  stolen from  railway tracks.

Trains between Newark and Swinderby had to be cancelled from 9am onwards and a  replacement bus service was put in place. Train services resumed at 1.45pm.

Network Rail engineers went to the site at Winthorpe, near Collingham, replacing the stolen cable, which is used to conduct  650 volts of electricity.

British Transport Police  are investigating the theft.

“Its beyond belief that someone would cut into a live power cable, i mean whats the point of a few pound in the pocket if your dead. Can people really be that desparate for money? if so something has seriously gone wrong with our society. As for punishment no good threatening these chaps with any form of harshness, the electric chair would be right up their street, they could even end up making a few pound out of the event.! But on a serious note, have things really got that bad that people are resorting to this just for the sake of a few pound.”

    “You know what confuses me?

    A couple of things.

1: Who would be stoooooopid enough to risk their life for what can only amount to about £50 of cable?

2: What do they hope to achieve from it cos its gotta be the Hottest Property in the market when they try sell it now its been in the paper?

3: Why has June Sarpong still got a job on channel four whan everyone knows shes a talentless horse faced weasle?”

“I just find it breathtaking that there are people stupid enough (never mind selfish enough) to do something as dangerous as this. It's a miracle they weren't electrocuted, although it would probably have been poetic justice if they had been. In my view it's just unbelievable.”

“I was working at an electricity sub-station recently. A burnt out hacksaw was found wedged in one of the cables that carries 11,000 volts. Unfortunately, there was no sign of a burnt out thief anywhere. These people really are numpties and deserve to be electrocuted or flattened by the nine oh three from Nottingham.”
