The second batch of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft are  to be delivered to a Lincolnshire RAF base next month.

RAF Coningsby will take delivery of five more of the fighter jets as part of the second phase of the Ministry of Defence's Typhoon project.

The aircraft, which will have an upgraded weapons system compared with the current jets, will arrive on base between October and December.

The rest of the 89 new Typhoons under contract with the MoD are expected to be built and delivered between now and 2014.

The £67million fighters will be initially based at RAF Coningsby while modification and integration of the new weapons systems are carried out.

Wing Commander Andy McGill of the MoD press office confirmed the jets will be coming to the county.

"Tranche two aircraft will initially be based at RAF Coningsby," said Wing Cmdr McGill.

"Based on current planning assumptions there will be three further front-line Typhoon squadrons which are due to be based at RAF Leuchars in Scotland.

"The first of those new squadrons will stand up from October 2010."

The arrival of the five new jets will bring the RAF's current in-service fleet of 49 craft to 54 .
