VIDEO: Alex Lowes secures British Superbike crown at Brands Hatch
Lincoln’s Alex Lowes clinched the British Superbike title amid incredible drama at Brands Hatch this afternoon.
Following his second place in yesterday’s race, Lowes went into today’s two races with a three-point advantage over three-time and reigning champion Shane Byrne.
Remarkably, both crashed out of the first race of the day which was run in tricky, damp conditions.
That set up a final-race shootout to decide the champion. Lowes and Byrne started ninth and 22nd respectively on the grid following their earlier crashes, but both charged through the field and ran second and third in treacherous conditions.

As eventual winner Josh Brookes sped away at the front, Byrne took second place from Samsung Honda’s Lowes. At that stage, the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki man was on course to take his fourth BSB crown.
But Lowes fought back superbly, reeling his rival in before making his move on lap 16 of the 20-lap race. Byrne stayed with his foe right up until the penultimate lap, but a couple of minor mistakes from the veteran allowed Lowes vital breathing space.
The 23-year-old held onto second place to stretch his advantage to seven points over Byrne, who took a valiant third.
Lowes' success completed a memorable double after his twin brother Sam secured the World Supersport title just two weeks ago.
