VIDEO: Rene Steer on learning the Arsenal way with Ashley Cole
Boston United new boy Rene Steer has revealed how he learned his trade at Arsenal, rubbing shoulders with fellow left-backs Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy.
After joining the club at the age of 13, Steer went on to sign professional terms with the Gunners and was included in several first-team squads without making a senior appearance.
Steer says Cole – regarded as the finest left-back of his generation – was often on hand to give advice to Arsenal’s youngsters before joining Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2006.

“When I first went full-time, he was still there before he left to go to Chelsea,” said Steer, who joined the Pilgrims last week from St Neots.
“Then there was Gael Clichy, who was just a mould of him. They bring every player through in the same way.
“They’d often come over to the younger lads, like me, in the gym and give us advice. They gave us a lot of encouragement. They’re good guys.”
