VOLUNTEERS at an east coast beach are celebrating after a successful summer of keeping a watchful eye over visitors.

Led by local man Shaun Gandy, a group of people set up a lookout service at Huttoft Car Terrace in December and have just completed their first full holiday season.

Although unaffiliated to any official agencies, the team took it upon themselves to help keep watch over the popular tourist spot, dealing with enquiries from the public and alerting the relevant emergency services where necessary.

Mr Gandy said: "To date we have kept a lookout over Huttoft Car Terrace and beach for more than 400 hours.

"We have alerted both HM Coastguard and Police on two occasions."

The volunteers' busiest times have been caring for members of the public who were stung by Weever Fish and on one day alone last week, they dealt with ten cases which were treated following guidance from the ambulance service.

Mr Gandy said: "Treatments were carried out on the Terrace with assistance from Sammy's Cafe providing hot water and comfort to those affected and for this, I express my gratitude to them. I know those affected appreciated their efforts.

"We would also express our gratitude to members of the public who have given their support in what we have been doing and to those who have generously donated funds to help our efforts.

"This has enabled us to purchase some items required to keep going, included in this we have our 'van' to provide shelter and a reasonably secure base to operate from, it also provides an occasional brew.

"I believe that this service provides some reassurance to those using the beach at Huttoft Car Terrace, and maybe makes it feel that bit safer."

The team wants to continue its watches during weekends until late autumn and any exceptionally good weather but is keen to hear from any volunteers who would be interested in helping out.
