A TOTAL of 1,200 trees and shrubs were planted during the annual Boston Woods Trust tree planting party on Sunday.

Despite the often heavy rain, 40 volunteers turned out for the event planting 1,000 mixed hazel, ash, hawthorn and gelder roses on the edge of Westwood lakes in Wyberton.

A further 200 oaks were planted to replace those that had died in the Oak Wood at the Old Hammond Beck end of the Sir Joseph Banks Park.

A Trust spokesman told the Target: "The trust would like to thank the 40 valiant volunteers who turned out on a wet Sunday morning to plant trees.

"Boston Woods Trust is a local charity relying on the good will of people for support.

"It was established to provide an easily accessible amenity for everyone to enjoy.

"There are currently 35,000 visits annually to its woods and parkland.

"All weather paths mean that even when it is wet underfoot it shouldn't put people off going for a walk.

"Walking is enjoyable as well as being good for physical and mental health and the people of Boston are demonstrating that if there are facilities available they will use them."
