West End and TV star Gavin Alex to headline Valentine's Ball in Sleaford

A WEST End stage and TV star will be headlining a glitzy charity Valentine’s Ball and auction in Sleaford this month.

Gavin Alex who was in the original cast of Footloose, Hairspray and appeared in the Royal Variety Show and the Blue Peter Pantomime will perform at the event at the New Life Conference Centre on Saturday, February 16, at 7.30pm.

The event has been organised by Sleaford Strider Kate Cook, from Quarrington, to raise money for Mind – a charity which gives advice and support to people with mental health problems.

Kate said: “I have suffered from depression and anxiety and wanted to raise awareness of mental health issues.”

As well as performances from Gavin Alex, the Valentine’s event will include a three-course meal, a disco, performances from local duo Frankly, Mr Shankly, local magician Scott Perry and Lincoln’s very own star of the stage Julie Fox will be the charity auctioneer on the night.

Kate is also running the London Marathon this year for Mind and with sponsorship of the marathon and proceeds from the charity ball she hopes to raise £1,650 in total.

Tickets for the night cost £30 and auction prizes that have been donated by local businesses so far include an iPad mini, a signed and framed 2013 lithograph of the Red Arrows, a two hour interior design consultation, a cut and blow-dry and more.

Kate added: “Some local businesses have already sponsored tables at the ball but I’m looking for other businesses to donate £50 to sponsor a table on the night.”

Karen Stretton-James, from Sleaford, who raises funds for her son Joel (Joel’s Quest) will also be making sweetie trees for the tables at the ball and will be running a sweetie buffet table on the night with proceeds going to Joel’s Quest.
